chiropracticChiropractic spinal decompression is a popular procedure used in back pain treatment

There are many reasons why people experience back pain. Very often, people suffering from back pain will try to self-medicate hoping that the pain is merely temporary, and with taking some OTC back pain medication, the situation will soon pass with minimal discomfort. But as is often the case with back problems, there are deeper and more underlying problems that will have to be addressed by professionals.

Pain medication, like morphine, may mask the pain a bit, but it does nothing to address the root cause of the problem. Until something is done that will fix the source of pain, the problem will never truly go away. People that are experiencing excruciating pain and/or has a pain in the same area of the back that keeps reoccurring, it’s time to get some medical consultation. Do it now before things get much worse, a very distinct (and scary) possibility when it relates to issues involving the spine, nerves, discs, vertebrae, and so on.

Where back pain could be coming from

When discs in the back are compressed, the material in the disc is displaced, moving out from between each disc and occupies space where sensitive nerves are. When these nerves become crowded, the patient feels the pressure and experiences great pain. Obviously, pain medication does nothing to alleviate the compression. This is where a chiropractic spinal decompression may be the safest and most effective means of alleviating the pain and healing the affected area.

Patients that are feeling tingling, weakness, or pain in their legs could be suffering from sciatica. Some patients, after examination, will be found to have a bulging or herniated disc, either in their back or perhaps their neck. Diagnosis could also reveal pinched nerves. In each of these cases, doctors may recommend chiropractic spinal decompression.

How spinal decompression is performed

In this procedure, the patient lies either face down or face up on the decompression table. This motorized table is used by the chiropractor to very slowly and gently stretch the spine, which relieves tension in the muscles. The chiropractor then “pumps” gently, helping to relieve pressure on the spinal discs and nerves along the spine.

This is not a one-time procedure. This process, with each treatment lasting about 15-20 minutes, could take from 6-24 sessions, all depending on the severity of the condition.

Over time, bulging or herniated discs will be retracted, and pinching and compression will be relieved. This treatment, in turn, helps promote restoration of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids back into the tissues. This procedure can be accompanied by other procedures such as electrical muscle stimulation, massage, ice or heat, or chiropractic adjustments. This can all be performed in the comfort of the chiropractor’s office.
