Dr. Whitmore has experience with an extensive variety of clientele after working in multiple inpatient, outpatient, rural and urban settings. As a result, Dr. Whitmore is a generalist who usually will say that the most interesting disorder is whichever disorder is in front of him at the time. However, Dr. Whitmore’s experience and expertise has been particularly focused on issues with depression, anxiety, anger, sleep, chronic pain, marital conflict, mood swings, trauma and suicidality.

Dr. Whitmore’s therapy style is primarily influenced by the multiple types of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is the most studied and respected form of therapy practiced today. Its aims are to improve a client’s feelings by changing their thoughts and actions in positive, but realistic, ways. In addition to CBT, Dr. Whitmore’s therapy style is also influenced by Motivational Interviewing, which helps to guide the pace of therapy by assessing how quickly the client is ready to make lifestyle changes. Finally, Dr. Whitmore’s approach to therapy also includes the assumption that most disorders have multiple causes, usually categorized as either biological, psychological or social. While a therapy office is better at addressing the psychological causes for mental health issues, it is still important to acknowledge and provide some information on how to help social or biological issues as well. As a result, Dr. Whitmore’s therapy will often include information that will directly treat biological or other causes, such as suggesting that adults and children with ADHD pursue the scientifically validated approach of including daily moderate exercise as part of their overall treatment of ADHD.

Finally, Dr. Whitmore has years of experience conducting psychological evaluations. Dr. Whitmore has completed psychological evaluations to determine ADHD, learning problems, and appropriate mental health diagnosis. Contact us today, to schedule an appointment with Dr. Whitmore.
